Home/Guides/Carpet shampooing vs extraction

Carpet shampooing vs hot-water extraction: which is better for Singapore homes?

Search for carpet cleaning in Singapore and you will see 'carpet shampooing' and 'carpet washing' offered side by side with 'steam cleaning' and 'extraction'. They are not the same thing, and the difference shows up a few weeks later, when one carpet stays clean and the other turns dull and grubby faster than before. This guide explains how each method works, why residue matters so much, how drying works in our humidity, and what to expect to pay. The same logic applies to sofa shampooing, which is covered at the end.

The short answer

  • Shampooing: foam is scrubbed into the pile with a rotary machine, then left to dry and vacuumed.
  • Extraction: a cleaning solution is flushed into the carpet and pulled straight back out with the dirt.
  • The catch with shampoo: leftover residue is sticky, so carpets can get dirty again faster.
  • Drying: extraction leaves carpet damp, not soaked; good airflow matters in our humidity.
  • Cost at BRISC: rugs from $55 a piece; wall-to-wall carpet quoted by area; $70 minimum order.

How carpet shampooing works

Carpet shampooing is one of the oldest methods. A foaming shampoo is applied and worked into the pile with a rotary brush machine. The foam traps dirt as it dries, and the dried residue is vacuumed up afterwards. It is good at agitating the surface and lifting the look of a heavily trafficked carpet quickly.

The weakness is what stays behind. It is hard to vacuum out all of the dried shampoo, and what remains is slightly sticky, so it grabs new dirt from shoes and feet.

How hot-water extraction works

Hot-water extraction, often called steam cleaning, flushes a cleaning solution down into the pile under pressure and immediately sucks it back out with a powerful vacuum, taking loosened dirt, grit and allergens with it. Because the solution is rinsed and extracted rather than left to dry in the carpet, much less residue stays behind.

It reaches further down too, into the base of the pile and the backing where sand and grit collect and grind the fibres down. That is the method BRISC uses for carpet and rug cleaning.

Why residue matters

Residue is the hidden cost of cheap carpet cleaning. A carpet with leftover shampoo looks great on the day, then darkens quickly in walkways because the sticky film holds onto every bit of grit. People then book another clean sooner, and the cycle repeats. The same thing happens at home if you use too much carpet shampoo in a rented machine and do not rinse it out.

Whatever method you use, ask how the cleaner rinses the carpet and how much residue is left. A good clean leaves the pile feeling soft, not stiff or tacky.

Drying in Singapore humidity

Drying is the hard part of carpet care here. A carpet that stays wet for a day can smell musty and, in the worst case, grow mould in the backing. That is why extraction aims to leave the carpet damp, not soaked.

  • Run the aircon or fans, and open windows if it is dry outside.
  • For a rug on tiles, prop up a corner so air gets underneath.
  • Keep foot traffic off until it is dry, and put foil or plastic under furniture legs if you move them back early.

Sofa shampooing: the same question

"Sofa shampooing" or "couch shampoo service" usually means the same foam-based approach on upholstery. The residue issue is the same: a sofa that is shampooed and not properly rinsed can feel stiff and get grubby faster, especially on armrests and headrests. Upholstery also has cleaning codes that limit what can be used, so a patch test matters.

BRISC's sofa and upholstery cleaning uses the same extraction approach: industrial vacuum, stain pre-treatment, a fabric-safe solution, agitation, deep extraction and deodorising. Sofas are priced per piece, from $55 for an armchair to $165 for a 4-seater L-shape; see the sofa cleaning price guide.

What carpet cleaning costs

At BRISC, small and mid-size rugs are priced per piece, from $55. Wall-to-wall and oversized carpets are quoted by floor area, so send a photo and a rough size on WhatsApp for a price. A $70 minimum order applies per visit, which you can reach by adding a sofa or mattress to the same visit.

What moves the price: the size, the fibre (wool and delicate rugs need more care, and silk or antique pieces are assessed first), how soiled it is, and whether it needs stain or odour treatment. Stain removal is never guaranteed; it depends on the stain and how long it has been there.

Frequently asked questions

Is carpet shampooing or steam cleaning better?
For most homes, hot-water extraction (often called steam cleaning) is better. It cleans deeper into the pile and leaves much less residue, so the carpet stays clean for longer. Shampooing can lift the look of a carpet quickly but tends to leave a sticky film behind.
How long does carpet take to dry after cleaning?
After extraction, most carpets and rugs are dry within a few hours with good airflow, because most of the moisture is pulled back out. Aircon, fans and propping up a rug's corner speed it up in our humidity.
How much does carpet cleaning cost in Singapore?
At BRISC, rugs start from $55 a piece, and wall-to-wall carpet is quoted by area from a photo and rough size. A $70 minimum order applies per visit.
Why does my carpet get dirty so fast after cleaning?
Usually because cleaning residue was left behind. Shampoo or detergent that is not fully rinsed out is slightly sticky and attracts new dirt. Ask how your cleaner rinses the carpet, and avoid over-using shampoo in rented machines.
Do you clean wall-to-wall carpet on site?
Yes. BRISC brings the equipment to you and cleans wall-to-wall carpet in place. Pricing is by floor area, so send a rough size and a photo on WhatsApp for a quote.
