Why "safe" matters more on fabric than anywhere else

Think about how differently your family uses fabric compared to any other surface. A baby doesn't just sit on the sofa, they crawl across it, press their face into the cushions, nap on it, and put their mouth on whatever corner they can reach. A dog or cat sleeps on it for hours, then grooms itself, licking whatever its coat picked up along the way. A mattress is in direct contact with your child's skin all night, every night.

Now compare that to a mopped floor. Whatever you clean a hard surface with mostly gets wiped away or evaporates. Fabric is different: it's an absorbent material, and whatever goes into it tends to stay in it. • A non-toxic, eco-friendly solution. The product that goes into the fabric should be gentle enough that trace contact is a non-issue, no harsh solvents, no heavy perfumes.
• No heavy fragrance. Strong perfumes linger in fabric and bother sensitive noses, pets' most of all. A good clean deodorises rather than masking smells.
• Thorough extraction. A proper machine extraction pulls the solution, the loosened soil and most of the moisture back out of the fabric. This is the step that separates a deep clean from a surface shampoo.

Notice that none of these questions are about price. A cheap clean that leaves detergent in the fabric your baby sleeps on isn't a bargain.

Room by room: the nursery and the pet corners

The cot mattress and the family bed. Mattresses collect skin flakes, sweat and dust mites faster than anything else in the home, and dust mites are one of the most common, widely recognised allergy triggers. The sofa the dog naps on. Pets bring warmth, dander, body oils and whatever their paws picked up outside, and they usually pick one favourite spot and stay loyal to it. That cushion is working several times harder than the rest of the sofa, so put the sofa on the shorter six-month cycle too.

Pet urine and odour spots. The golden rule is speed. Urine wicks down into the foam within minutes, and once it dries, the smell keeps returning with humidity until the whole depth of the spot is flushed, extracted and properly deodorised. Blot what you can straight away, don't rub, and get the spot professionally treated soon after. Surface sprays only mask what's deeper in the cushion.

Cleaning a baby's cot mattress

A cot mattress takes milk, drool, sweat and nappy leaks, and your baby breathes right against it for 12 hours or more a day. Between professional cleans:

1. Strip and wash the bedding hot, at 60°C if the labels allow, including the waterproof protector.
2. Remove the mattress cover if it unzips and the label says it is washable, and wash it as directed.
3. Vacuum the mattress on both sides and along the seams.
4. Spot clean marks with a cloth dampened in a little mild, fragrance-free soap and water, then wipe with plain water. Never soak a cot mattress or use strong cleaners on it.
5. Dry it completely on its side with a fan or the aircon before your baby sleeps on it again.
