Curtain dry cleaning in Singapore: is it worth it, or is on-site steam better?

Curtain dry cleaning is the option most people reach for when the label says 'dry clean only' or the curtains are too big for the washing machine. It works well for some fabrics, but it is also the slowest and most disruptive way to clean curtains: they come down, they leave the house, and your windows stay bare until they come back. This guide explains what actually happens, what to watch out for, and when cleaning curtains where they hang is the better choice.

The short answer

  • How it works: curtains are taken down, cleaned in a solvent instead of water, pressed and then rehung.
  • The trade-off: your windows are bare for several days, and someone has to take down and rehang heavy panels.
  • Shrinkage: lower than a water wash, but pressing heat and linings that shrink at a different rate can still cause problems.
  • Best for: silk, some velvets and anything labelled 'dry clean only' that cannot take steam.
  • The alternative: on-site steam cleaning cleans most curtains where they hang, on the same day.

How curtain dry cleaning works

Despite the name, dry cleaning is not dry. The curtains are cleaned in a liquid solvent instead of water, which dissolves oils and grime without swelling the fibres the way water does. That is why it is gentler on fabrics that shrink or distort when wet.

For curtains, the process usually looks like this:

  1. Take down. The curtains come off the track, and the hooks, rings and weights are removed. Some services do this for you; with others, it is your job.
  2. Collection. They go to the dry cleaner, either dropped off or collected.
  3. Cleaning. They are spot-treated and cleaned in solvent, then dried.
  4. Pressing. They are steamed or pressed to remove creases.
  5. Return and rehang. They come back, often a few days to a week later, and go back up.

Prices are usually per panel or by weight, and collection, take-down and rehanging may be extra. Ask for an all-in quote so you know what is included.

What the care label tells you

Check the label sewn into the side hem or lining. A circle symbol means the fabric can be dry cleaned, and a crossed-out circle means it should not be. "Dry clean only" usually means the maker does not trust the fabric, the lining or the finish in water. That is common for silk, some velvets, curtains with stiff interlinings, and fabrics with a lot of drape.

If there is no label, think about the fabric: cotton and linen shrink most in water, polyester tolerates most methods, and coated blackout curtains need care with any method. Our curtain cleaning guide goes fabric by fabric.

The risks to know about

  • Bare windows for days. In a bedroom that faces east or a living room on a low floor, that is more than an inconvenience.
  • Taking down heavy curtains. Long, lined panels are heavy and awkward at height, and hooks get lost or bent.
  • Shrinkage at the pressing stage. Solvent itself causes little shrinkage, but heat during pressing can, and a lining can shrink at a different rate to the face fabric so the curtain puckers.
  • Coatings. Some blackout and thermal coatings can stiffen, crack or peel. Ask the cleaner whether they handle coated curtains.
  • Solvent smell. Some people notice a chemical smell on freshly dry-cleaned fabric. Airing it out helps.

Dry cleaning vs on-site steam

Bare windowsUsually several daysNone; back in use the same day
Shrinkage riskLow to medium (pressing heat, linings)Low; the fabric is never soaked
Best forSilk, delicate velvet, "dry clean only" fabrics that cannot take steamPolyester, blends, sheers, most day and blackout curtains
Heavy stainsGood for oil-based stainsGood for dust, grime and smells; some stains need spot treatment

Which one should you choose?

Choose dry cleaning for silk, delicate or antique fabrics, and anything clearly labelled "dry clean only" that should not meet steam, or when the curtains are coming down anyway, for example during a renovation.

For most curtains in Singapore homes, which are polyester, blends, sheers and day curtains, cleaning them where they hang is quicker and far less disruptive. Dust, cooking smells and the grey film from open windows come out, and there is no take-down, no bare windows and no shrinkage from a wash.

BRISC's on-site curtain cleaning starts from $55 a panel, with a $70 minimum order per visit, and the curtains are back in use the same day. Not sure which suits yours? Send us a photo of the curtain and its label on WhatsApp. We would rather tell you a fabric needs the dry cleaner than steam something we shouldn't. For how often to clean them, see our cleaning schedule guide.

Frequently asked questions

How much does curtain dry cleaning cost in Singapore?
It is usually priced per panel or by weight, and take-down, collection and rehanging may cost extra, so ask for an all-in quote. On-site steam cleaning from BRISC starts from $55 a panel with a $70 minimum order, with no take-down.
How long does curtain dry cleaning take?
Often a few days to a week from collection to rehanging, depending on the cleaner and how many panels you have. Your windows stay bare in the meantime. On-site steam cleaning is done in a single visit.
Will dry cleaning shrink my curtains?
The solvent itself causes little shrinkage, but heat during pressing can, and linings sometimes shrink at a different rate to the face fabric. Tell the cleaner the curtains are lined and ask how they press them.
Can blackout curtains be dry cleaned?
Some can and some cannot. Certain blackout and thermal coatings stiffen, crack or peel. Check the care label and ask the cleaner whether they handle coated curtains before you send them.
Is steam cleaning safe for curtains?
For most polyester, blend, sheer and day curtains, yes, because the fabric is never soaked. Silk and delicate fabrics are the exception. Send a photo of the fabric and label and we will tell you honestly whether it suits steam.

Rather not take the curtains down?

We clean them on site, where they hang, and they're back in use the same day. Send a photo and roughly how many panels on WhatsApp for a clear price.
